Surgido como consecuencia del reajuste de las fronteras entre lo biológico y lo tecnológico, el término “vida artificial” aparece a finales del siglo XX para designar una disciplina multidisciplinar que, prácticamente desde su origen, se extiende al campo de la creación artística. Dentro del contexto de una sociedad cada vez más informatizada, varios artistas empezaron a reflexionar sobre la llamada vida artificial, apropiándose para ello de sus propias técnicas.

En 1998, Fundación Telefónica puso en marcha el Concurso Internacional VIDA con el fin de premiar la excelencia en el arte desarrollado a partir de tecnologías de vida artificial. Pionero en este campo, VIDA llega a su X Aniversario convertido en un referente internacional. Por ser único en el mundo, este concurso tiene la gran responsabilidad de dar forma a una disciplina emergente. Las 100 obras premiadas a lo largo de estos años constituyen un fondo inestimable que documenta la evolución del arte electrónico en una de sus facetas más relevantes.

El presente DVD, que recoge las obras ganadoras de VIDA a lo largo de sus diez primeros años de existencia, constituirá sin duda una magnífica oportunidad para que el público conozca el enorme potencial creativo de una de las más sorprendentes manifestaciones artísticas de la actualidad.

The Best of VIDA

Born out of the re-adjustment of the borders between biology and technology, the term “artificial life” arose at the end of the 20th century to designate a multidisciplinary discipline that, practically from the outset, has spread into the field of artistic creation. Within the context of an ever more computerized society, several artists began to reflect on so-called artificial life and imbued it with their own techniques.

In 1998, the Telefónica Foundation set up the VIDA International Competition on Art and Artificial Life with a view to rewarding excellence in art developed out of A-Life technologies. Pioneer in its field, VIDA has now reached its 10th Anniversary as an international benchmark. As it is unique in the world, this competition bears the great responsibility of shaping an emerging discipline. The 100 works that have received its awards over these years constitute an invaluable collection documenting the evolution of electronic art in one of its most significant facets.

This DVD with the works that have been awarded at VIDA throughout its first ten years of existence will without a doubt constitute a magnificent opportunity for the general public to be aware of the enormous creative potential of one of the most surprising artistic manifestations of the modern age.
